If you know me, you know I'm a tea lover. Tea > coffee any day. Currently, my favorite brands are Traditional Medicinals, Yogi and PC Organics. Choosing organic is important because conventional teas are sprayed with hormone disrupting pesticides and aren't as nutrient dense. Since starting my acne healing journey, I love utilizing the impressive actions of herbs to support my hormones and keep my skin clear and glowing. These are some of my go tos.
GINGER TEA
Inflammation is a root cause of acne and ginger contains compounds like gingerol and shogaol which have powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger can also stimulate digestive motility to help remove toxins and excess hormones from the body which is crucial for clear skin. I like to make a batch of ginger tea at home for the week using organic ginger. See how I make it here https://www.instagram.com/p/CkGNkDYuEA0/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
DANDELION TEA
Dandelion is a hepatic herb which means it's liver supportive. It is known to support liver detoxification which is essential for hormone balance since one of the many functions of the liver is to regulate estrogen. Keep in mind that dandelion is also a diuretic which means it promotes urine production so don't drink it too close to bed time. The last thing we want for our hormones is disrupted sleep.
SPEARMINT TEA
Like ginger, spearmint is also anti-inflammatory but the real super power of this herb is that studies show it can reduce testosterone, which is the hormone that causes oily skin, clogged pores and acne. I love it as an afternoon snack with a piece of 80% or more dark chocolate.
NETTLE TEA
This mineral rich tea was first recommended to me by my naturopath for my anemia because it's loaded with iron and Vitamin C to help with the iron absorption. It's also rich in zinc which may promote skin healing from the inside out. Nettle also supports the liver and kidneys which are two of our body's main detox organs. This is crucial because when our detox pathways are sluggish, we aren't eliminating excess toxins and hormones, and it can show up on the skin.
CHAMOMILE TEA
Everyone drinks chamomile tea for sleep but did you know this calming tea can actually be beneficial for acne. Of course, better sleep equals better skin since we are repairing and regulating overnight, but chamomile also soothes acne in other ways. It's antibacterial which can help kill acne causing bacteria, it offers gentle detoxification to remove toxins and it can help calm the nervous system and reduce cortisol, which is a hormone that's a big trigger for breakouts. I highly encourage creating a bed time ritual; read a book, listen to some classical music, take a bath and sip on some chamomile tea to reset those hormones.
